Local Labs
Whether you want to serve your local community or venture off to someplace new, exciting jobs are available all across the state. California has an exceedingly diverse landscape and population, representing unique challenges for its public health laboratories.
California's public health laboratories form the California Laboratory Network, comprised of the State Department of Public Health laboratory and 38 local county or municipal public health laboratories. Eight of these are in the San Francisco Bay Area, 8 in other coastal areas, 6 are in or near Los Angeles, 15 are in the great central valley and desert areas, and 2 are in mountainous areas.
Both state and local public health laboratories in California share the responsibility for assuring the ability to determine the source of unexplained deaths and illness from infectious disease causes. When local public health laboratories need further specimen testing assistance, they send specimens to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) State Public Health Laboratory where the identification of causative agents assists local and state public health officials to prevent further infections. Fourteen local Public Health Laboratories in addition to the State Laboratory participate in the federal Laboratory Response Network (LRN) as Reference Laboratories. These Reference Laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to rapidly identify agents of bio-terrorism.
